The Importance of AEDs – Automated External Defibrillators in the Workplace | Wellbeing
When someone is unresponsive and not breathing, each minute that passes without chest compressions, artificial respiration, or defibrillation reduces their chance of survival by up to 10%. Quick use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can improve survival rates to between 50% and 70%. Thus, in many modern workplaces, having an AED on hand is considered essential for on-site first aid.
What is an AED?
An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is used to assist individuals experiencing cardiac arrest (unresponsive and not breathing). It is a sophisticated yet user-friendly medical device. Through pads applied to the chest, it can analyze the heart rhythm and, if necessary, administer a shock to restore normal heart function.
When Should You Use an AED?
Immediate chest compressions and artificial respiration are crucial, as the brain and vital organs cannot function without an oxygen supply. The recommended steps for first aid are as follows:
- Call 115 and ask someone to bring the AED to the scene before you begin first aid.
- Place the victim on their back on a firm surface and start CPR.
- If you are not trained in CPR, continue chest compressions until there is movement or emergency medical personnel arrive.
- If you know how to perform CPR, alternate between chest compressions and breaths: 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths, until help arrives.
- When the AED arrives, turn it on and follow the voice prompts to deliver a shock if needed.
Without an AED, the likelihood of successfully reviving someone through chest compressions and rescue breaths alone is minimal. Effective defibrillation typically requires the use of an AED.
