Why is it Important to equip schools with AED?
All schools nationwide are currently equipped with fire alarms and fire extinguishers. However, not many schools in Vietnam are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AED). AED is a crucial first aid device that should be available in all schools across the country.
I.What is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a vital emergency device, especially in crowded places like schools. AED is not just for those with medical knowledge. This device is designed to be compact and user-friendly, enabling even individuals without any medical experience or knowledge to use them, thereby increasing the chances of survival for victims of cardiac arrest.
II.Why do schools need AED?
1. Increase the Survival Rate:
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a rare event but claims the lives of approximately 7,000 children annually in the United States (according to the American Heart Association). SCA is not a heart attack but an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes it to suddenly stop beating. SCA can affect any student, in any sport or activity, and at any age, without warning. Every minute that passes without defibrillation and CPR for an SCA victim reduces the survival rate by 7% to 10%. Having an AED readily available in schools means we can act quickly, giving students a chance of survival while waiting for professional medical assistance.
2. Promote a Safety-Conscious Environment:
Equipping schools with AED and providing CPR training sends a message to the community that the school is prepared to handle severe health emergencies, not just theoretically but in practice.
3. Reduce Response Time in Emergencies:
In some cases, waiting for an ambulance or medical personnel to arrive can mean losing the critical window for early intervention. With AED on-site, trained school staff and even students can immediately intervene and provide assistance to the victim.
4. Peace of Mind for the Community and Parents:
Seeing that the school is equipped with AED and has trained personnel to use them reassures parents that their children are in a safe environment. It shows that the school prioritizes the safety of students and is willing to invest in it. This peace of mind strengthens the trust between the school, students, and parents.
Currently, Wellbeing is distributing leading AED models in Vietnam, offering a wide range of products, including four main brands: Philips from the UK, Zoll from the USA, Nihon Kohden from Japan, and Nanoom Tech from South Korea.
