1. What is Cardiogenic Shock?

Cardiogenic shock is a condition of decreased cardiac output that fails to meet the oxygen demands of the body's tissues. A diagnosis of cardiogenic shock is established after excluding other types of shock: hypovolemic shock, anaphylactic shock, and septic shock.

2. Classification of Heart Defibrillators

There are 3 types of defibrillators:

  • Manual Defibrillators (or Defibrillator Paddles).

  • Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

  • Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (AICD/ICD).

3. Structure of a Defibrillator

A defibrillator consists of:

  • Pulse Generator: A capacitor charged by an AC power source capable of discharging an electric current with specific properties required for defibrillation.

  • Defibrillator Paddles/Pads: Sizes vary depending on whether the shock is internal or external (thoracic), and whether for adults or children. For adults undergoing transthoracic (external) defibrillation, the diameter needs to be ≥ 80cm (See Translator's Note below).

  • Lead Wires: With 3 – 5 electrodes.

  • Monitor Screen: Displays the electrocardiogram (ECG) waves received from the electrodes or paddles, along with technical parameters.

  • Selection Button/Key: To choose the Synchronized Cardioversion mode (SYN = synchronization).

  • Energy Selection Button/Key: To select the energy level (measured in Joules or Watts). Levels of 5-50J are primarily used for direct defibrillation on the heart during open-chest surgery; higher levels are typically used for external chest defibrillation.

  • Charge Button: To load the energy (CHARGE).

  • Discharge Button: To deliver the shock.
