F.A.S.T: FIRST AID FOR STROKE VICTIMS - TIME IS MONEY
Stroke is common among older adults and those with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart failure, etc.). However, there is a trend of strokes affecting younger people in the community.
Strokes can leave irreversible after-effects such as speech difficulties, facial drooping, limited mobility, paralysis on one side of the body, etc. Early recognition of signs and timely transport to the hospital will increase the victim's chances of recovery. Therefore, in stroke first aid, time is gold.
Recognizing a Stroke Victim Using the F.A.S.T. Rule
-
FACE: Sudden drooping of the mouth, deviated philtrum, or facial droop. Check by asking the victim to smile or pucker their lips to whistle.
-
ARM: Sudden weakness in one arm, inability to lift, hold, or grasp. Check by asking the victim to raise both arms in front of them.
-
SPEECH: Sudden difficulty speaking or unclear speech. Check by asking the victim questions.
-
TIME: Record the time of onset to inform medical personnel.
Upon detecting a stroke victim, you should: Seek assistance from those around you and immediately call emergency services (115) as soon as possible. Inform the operator that you suspect someone is having a stroke.
Next, handle the stroke based on the victim's specific condition:
Case 1: If they are conscious, help them lie down and keep them warm. Limit requests for the victim to move. When the body is cold, blood vessels constrict, which can worsen the stroke condition.
Case 2: If the victim is unconscious, place them in the recovery position. This position ensures the hotel guest does not inhale vomit or fluids, thereby avoiding the risk of aspiration into the lungs. Instructions for placing a victim in the simple recovery position can be found at: https://socapcuu.com.vn/.tu-the-nam-nghieng-an-toan-tu...
Remember: If you cannot do anything else, do not put the victim in danger by applying folklore remedies.
-
Do not attempt to prick the tips of the fingers or toes, as pain stimulation will agitate the victim, causing a rapid heartbeat and increased blood pressure.
-
Do not give them food or drink, as this can lead to aspiration into the lungs, causing severe damage and prolonging recovery.
