Protocol for Performing External Defibrillation | Wellbeing
Steps for Performing External Defibrillation
Step 1: Preparation and Monitoring Begin by removing the patient's upper clothing along with any jewelry, watches, rings, or sharp objects on the body; ensure the patient is not in contact with metal bed rails. Thoroughly dry the entire chest area and attach the electrode pads according to the diagram displayed on the device (multifunction electrodes for ECG, defibrillation, and pacing may be used).
Step 2: Analysis Power on the device by pressing the ON button. Press the LEAD button to allow the machine to automatically analyze the patient's heart rhythm displayed on the screen. The device will determine whether an electric shock is required or if Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) should be performed instead. If a shock is deemed necessary, proceed to the following steps.
Step 3 & 4: Energy Selection and Paddle Placement Select the appropriate energy level by pressing the ENERGY SELECT button, then press CHARGE to prepare the device. While the machine is charging, apply conductive gel to the surface of the defibrillator paddles. Position the paddles on the patient's chest strictly following the placement indicators marked on the device or paddles.
Step 5: Delivering the Shock When an audible beep signals that the device is fully charged and the screen displays READY, ensure absolute safety by verifying that no one is touching the patient or any metal objects in contact with them. Execute the shock by pressing the discharge buttons on both paddles simultaneously until the patient's body recoils from the shock. Immediately check the patient's breathing and pulse. If a heartbeat is restored but breathing has not returned, continue CPR (rescue breathing). If a shockable rhythm persists, repeat the defibrillation process.
Step 6: Post-Procedure and Maintenance After the procedure, turn off the device by pressing the Power button. Clean the paddles thoroughly and return them to their designated slots. Remove the monitoring electrodes from the patient and dispose of or store them according to regulations.
Safety Warnings:
-
Avoid operating the device in environments with a risk of explosion, especially in the presence of flammable gases/anesthetics.
-
Keep the device plugged into a power source when not in use to ensure the battery is always fully charged and ready for emergencies.
-
Crucial: Never touch the patient while the shock is being delivered.
