Important Precautions for Buying and Using AEDs | Wellbeing

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are becoming a common sight globally in locations such as shopping malls, train stations, hospitals, and schools. However, simply having an AED is not enough; knowing how to use it safely is equally critical. The Wellbeing Health Education Organization provides the following essential precautions for purchasing and using an AED.

1. Safety Precautions for AED Usage

  • DO NOT use or deploy the AED if you have not received instruction on its use.

  • DO NOT use the device if it reports a system error.

  • DO NOT use the device (specifically units like the ZOLL AED Plus) if it is emitting a beeping sound.

  • ALWAYS ensure the electrode cable is connected to the AED unit after installing the battery.

  • ALWAYS keep the electrode cable connected to the AED unit (pre-connected).

  • ONLY use electrodes labeled "Infant/Child" on children under 8 years old or weighing less than 25 kg (55 lbs).

  • ALWAYS stand clear of the victim during shock delivery. The defibrillation energy can conduct through the victim's body and cause fatal electric shock to anyone touching them.

  • DO NOT touch the electrode surface, the victim, or any conductive material in contact with the victim during ECG analysis or defibrillation.

  • MOVE the victim away from conductive surfaces (e.g., metal floors) before using the device.

  • DO NOT use this device in or near standing water.

  • KEEP the victim as motionless as possible during ECG analysis.

  • DO NOT use near flammable substances, such as gasoline fumes, high oxygen concentrations, or flammable anesthetics.

  • AVOID radio frequency interference from high-power sources (turn off mobile phones and 2-way radios) to prevent the AED from misinterpreting the heart rhythm.

  • DISCONNECT non-defibrillation-proof medical or electronic equipment from the victim before delivering a shock.

  • WIPE the victim's chest dry if it is wet before applying electrodes.

  • APPLY newly opened, undamaged, and unexpired electrodes on clean, dry skin to minimize burn risk.

  • DO NOT place electrodes directly over an implanted pacemaker. The stimulus from the pacemaker may degrade the accuracy of ECG analysis, or the pacemaker itself may be damaged by the defibrillation shock.

  • DO NOT use the head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver if a head or neck injury is suspected. Place the victim on a firm surface before performing CPR.

  • DO NOT recharge, disassemble, or dispose of batteries in fire. Batteries may explode if handled improperly.

  • DO NOT stack the AED on top of or under other electronic equipment. If stacking is necessary, verify normal operation before use.

  • KEEP the AED away from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment.

2. Where Should You Buy an AED?

An AED is a specialized medical device, not a common off-the-shelf item, and it represents a significant investment. Therefore, finding a reputable distributor in Vietnam is crucial to ensuring you get a high-quality device at a reasonable price that suits your organization's needs.

While you can find AEDs online with just a few clicks, the multitude of suppliers can be overwhelming. Buying an AED is a major decision; you need a device that is safe, reliable, and well-maintained. A reputable distributor is key to meeting these goals.

Types of Distributors:

  • Cross-Border Online Retailers: Sites like Amazon or eBay offer various AED models. However, for buyers in Vietnam, purchasing from these sources involves high shipping costs and significant challenges regarding maintenance, warranty claims, and error troubleshooting.

  • Direct Distributors: These include independent AED specialists (often providing CPR training) or medical equipment companies. It is crucial to find a business that operates with integrity, ethics, and professionalism (like Wellbeing).

Checklist for Choosing a Distributor: Ensure the distributor guarantees the following:

  • Timely notifications regarding device repairs or manufacturer product recalls.

  • A valid warranty from the manufacturer, with a commitment to honor it.

  • Full support and consultation for any questions or difficulties arising during use.

  • Expertise in training: Choose a distributor capable of retraining your staff on how to use the device effectively.

We hope this information helps you select the right AED and a trustworthy partner for your safety needs.
